Remembering
Our Forgotten Kids
|
How's
your ministry to "forgotten" teenagers? Forgotten
teenagers are noticeably absent for long periods of time or are
ignored by parents, peers, and the church in general. You'd be
surprised at who the list includes: academic achievers, at-risk
kids, high school dropouts, and super-busy, involved-in-everything
teenagers who don't have time to come to youth group.
Have
your kids help you create a list of forgotten kids, and then try
these ideas to include them and show them you care:
- Create
alternate settings and times to get together.
- Invite
kids on the list to eat breakfast at a nearby McDonald's
before a worship service. Or hold Saturday morning breakfasts
at the same place.
- Find
out what these kids' favorite hobbies and sports are. Then
plan events that capitalize on those interests-baseball card
shows, chess tournaments, or music concerts.
- Hold
quick get-togethers and surprise parties. Call up kids at the
last minute and invite them. Many teenagers feel comfortable
attending a spur-of-the-moment outing; nothing's expected of
them except their presence.
- Start
a note file with a different card for each teenager. Record
each contact made. Contact parents. This lets them know you
care that their son or daughter attends your events.

It All Starts with God. "For
everything, absolutely everything above and below, visible and
invisible ... everything got started in him and finds its purpose in
him. Colossian
